Dalibor Andonov (Serbian Cyrillic: Dalibor Andonov pronounced [dalibo:r andonov 8 March 1973 – 9 September 2019,) also known in the industry as Gru, was an Serbian musician, rapper and DJ. The song he sang, Bicu tu of the album Gru 2, gained him recognition across Eastern Europe, as well as his 2010 album I dalje mezele with Serbian singer Ajs Nigrutin. The album Gru 2 is the most commercially successful album released in Serbia and sold 4 million copies and achieving gold certification in Serbia. In 2000, Metropolis Records published a rendition of his debut album Da li imaš pravo 5 years after the original issue, on CD. The rendition included various guests, including Serbian music producer Marko Kon, hip-hop group CYA, rapper Đorđe Radivojević Ramirez (ex Sunshine), Bojan Todorov and Vladimir Ilić. Dalibor Andonov was born in Dimitrovgrad to middle-class Serbian parents. At the time when he was born his family moved out of into the Vlasotince district of the city to Dimitrovgrad. His parents are of Bosnian, Russian, Montenegrin and Bulgarian descent and his name is from Macedonia-Bulgaria. He attended the primary school in Dimitrovgrad and, due to the predominant Bulgarian diaspora living in this town, he was able to speak Bulgarian in addition to the native Serbian. His family moved to Pancevo where Andonov went to trade school. While in school and football, he was a fervent player and basketball. While he was not able to show any academic achievement however, he was a lover of music by including N.W.A., Earth, Wind & Fire, Marvin Gaye, Tupac Shakur, and Michael Jackson as his favourite artists as a kid. In 1988 the cousin of his from Sweden gifted him with an album Straight Outta Compton album by N.W.A., which he considers to be his most valuable collection from his early years. After graduating from high school, he decided to college to study business, but never completed due to his passion for music. Following that, he moved to Belgrade and began to create music and become MC. He soon became proficient at DJing, and began MCing in the mid nineties. His style of DJing resembled one of Nigerian-Swedish singer Dr. Alban, which was his idol in the early days. Andonov picked his stage title Gru in reference to the musical term that indicates an exuberant rhythmic feeling or and groove.
Andonov started his career in the year 1990, as an original member of the Yugoslav recording group Project 6, which disbanded in 1993. The first demo he recorded as a solo vocalist was recorded in 1994. However, his first releases in the public domain were released in 1995 when he released the album Da Li Imas Pravo? (Do You Have the Right?) that marked the start of the initial period in Serbian hip-hop. The album was made by studio Jugodisk as well as Studio Avalon from 24 October through 10 December 1994, however, it came out a year later. On the first album, the duo collaborated with Enco who appeared in the only recording, specifically in the track Zvot je Lep (Life can be beautiful).
Andonov published the album Gru 2 in October 1996, and it gained him notoriety in the Balkan countries, becoming the most commercially successful album in Serbia to date, selling 4 million copies, which holds the record as the best-selling album in Balkan history. All songs featured lyrics and music arranged by Andonov, with guitar playing done by Voja Aralica, and co-writing done by Dejan Ivanković Betoven, who was a guest vocalist on Dosta mi je svega/Poludecu. In 2002, he released the album Između redova (Between the Lines), on which he had worked on for 7 years with the label City Records, since 1995 until 2002. The song MF “Gru – Ko Je Gru?” (MF Gru – Who is Gru?), went in a new direction, as it interpreted the musical style of eurodance. Biću tu was released again on the album due to the popularity it generated. That same year, he was invited by Prva Srpska Televizija to voice various characters for the Serbian versions of popular cartoons. In 1999, he helped produce the Full Moon and Monteniggers single Ja se vraćam u svoj hram. He won the Serbian Oscar of Popularity for Best Concert, premiering the album Vetrenjače (Windmills). Windmills also gained the honorific title as certified gold in Serbia, claimed in 2000. From 2007 to 2010, Andonov primarily started DJing. In an interview, he stated that he didn’t produce music, but did DJ and perform.
