Peters started her career in writing after the release of her two first novels, The Stinky Sneakers Contest with illustrations by Cat Bowman Smith, in 1992 and Risky Friends in 1993.
Johanna is a senior in high school living in an apartment above the home occupied her older sister Tessa. Both her parents have died and she has come out as a lesbian to Tessa and to her best friend, Novak. A teacher ropes her into tutoring Robbie, a boy with mild autism, so that he can graduate. Johanna discovers that surprisingly, Robbie is the twin brother of Johanna’s secret crush, Reeve Hartt. As Johanna tries to get closer to Reeve, she begins to experience some of the physical abuse that is part of Reeve’s daily life, living with a drug-addicted mother and a violent uncle. Because Johanna believes she is in love with Reeve, she suffers through emotional, verbal, and physical abuse.
Peters initially worked as an educator as a fifth grade teacher and being a special needs educational assistant for the Jefferson County School District in Lakewood, Colorado, 1975. Peters was then employed as an assistant to the secretary, researcher computer programmer and systems analyst at Tracom Corporation , based in Denver from 1975 to 1984. After that, Peters was a computer system engineer for “Electronic Data Systems” in Denver from 1985 until 1988.
Peters earned an B.A. for elementary schooling at Colorado Women’s College in 1974 and an additional major in French. Peters taught the fifth grade in Colorado for one year, after which she and her principal decided that teaching wasn’t the best career path for her. Peters returned to college to earn her B.S. in management and computing at the Metropolitan State University of Denver in the year 1985. In the following 10 year period, Peters worked as a researcher computer programmer, researcher, as well as a systems engineer. in 1989 Peters received the M.B.A. in the University of Colorado Denver with the focus on information systems.
