Robert Nilsson Biography
Robert Nilsson is one of the most popular and richest Ice Hockey Player who was born on January 10, 1985 in Calgary, Canada. Nilsson represented Sweden at both the 2008 and 2011 IIHF World Championships. He won silver in 2011 and bronze at the 2003, 2004, and 2005 World Junior Championships.
On June 30, 2010, the remainder of Nilsson’s contract was bought out by the Oilers. He had one year remaining on his original three-year contract, and would have earned $2.5 million with a $2 million hit against the salary cap. With this buyout, Nilsson became an unrestricted free agent.
He transferred to fellow KHL side Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod during the 2011-12 season, where he also spent the following 2012-13 campaign.
Nilsson was recalled to Sound Tigers in 2006-07. Nilsson remained with the club through February 27, 2007, when he traded to the Edmonton Oilers along with Ryan O’Marra, Ryan Smyth’s 1st round draft pick, and Ryan Smyth’s NHL Entry Draft 2007 pick. Nilsson transferred AHL teams accordingly and began playing in the Oilers’ farm system with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. On March 15, 2007, he was called up and scored his first goal as an Oiler. He would record 70 points in his two subsequent seasons with the Oilers.
He remained in Sweden for two more seasons. This included a seven-game stint at HC Fribourg-Gotteron in the Swiss Nationalliga A. Before joining the Islanders in 2005-06. Nilsson’s first NHL goal was scored against the Buffalo Sabres on October 29, 2005. Nilsson struggled to adapt to the NHL style of play, and was sent to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (Islanders’ American Hockey League affiliate). Nilsson, who scored 28 points (8 goals and 20 assists in 29 games for Sound Tigers), was recalled by the Islanders to complete his rookie NHL season. He also recorded 20 points in 53 games. Nilsson was once a member of the team’s top line, along with Alexei Yashin and Sean Bergenheim.
On July 22, 2010, it became known that Nilsson had signed a 2-year contract with Salavat Yulaev Ufa of the Kontinental Hockey League.
