Joe “Spanky” McFarland (born on 24th May 1954) is an American former college baseball coach who served as the head coach for Northern Illinois (1991-1997) and James Madison (1998-2015). Under his guidance, JMU appeared in three NCAA tournaments. A student of 1976 from Hillsdale College, McFarland served as an assistant coach in several schools during the 1970s and into the 1980s.
Following 1991’s play as an independent team, NIU participated in the Mid-Continent Conference from 1992 to 1994. The team was in the bottom third of the conference throughout every season the most wins total the year the year 1994 (23-30). From 1995 until 1997 it was a part of the Horizon League and qualified for the conference tournament every season. In 1995, the team had it’s first above-.500 season under the guidance of McFarland (29-27) It finishing third in West Division, and placed third in the Horizon Tournament. A born and raised in New Carlisle, Ohio, McFarland was a student at Tecumseh High School, where the school played basketball, football and baseball. Then, he played baseball and football during his time at the University of Michigan’s Hillsdale College. Following his graduation in the spring of 1976, he attended a an in-training camp for the Canadian Football League’s Calgary Stampeders before starting his coaching career the following year.
McFarland’s initial coaching gig was as an assistant coach at Hillsdale in 1977. The following time, he was Head Coach in Kellogg Community College, also located in Michigan from 1979 to 1980. After missing the CAA Tournament in 2004 and 2005, the Dukes went 38-21 in 2006 and won the CAA regular season title. They finished third in the CAA Tournament, however, and did not receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
McFarland’s best four-year stretch at James Madison came from 2008 to 2011. In this stretch, the Dukes had three 30-win seasons and a 40-win season.
