After his collegiate ice hockey career ended with an accident that left him quadriplegic, he co-wrote an autobiography titled Eleven Seconds and launched The Travis Roy Foundation to fund medical research and to assist fellow survivors of spinal cord injuries.
Roy and Brooke Ellison – a graduate of Harvard University and the subject of the TV movie The Brooke Ellison Story – both achieved great things despite being quadriplegic as the result of early accidents.
On October 20, 1995 – just eleven seconds into his first-ever shift for Boston University men’s ice hockey team – a 20-year-old Roy slid head-first into the boards after University of North Dakota player Mitch Vig avoided Roy’s check. In 1998, North Yarmouth Academy’s ice arena was named the “Travis Roy Arena” in his honor. His jersey number, 00, was retired by NYA as well. It hangs in the rafters alongside Eric Weinrich’s #7 — the only numbers retired by NYA.
In October 1999, Roy’s #24 was retired, and raised to the rafters of Boston University’s Walter Brown Arena, now present in BU’s Agganis Arena. Roy was the only BU hockey player to have been honored with a retired number until his former coach, Jack Parker was given the honor in 2014.

Inspired by Travis’ own story, the lifeblood of the Travis Roy Foundation has been the generosity of individuals, corporations and foundations across North America. In October 2015, Sargent College Dean Christopher Dean announced, at a fundraiser for the foundation, that a group of anonymous donors gave a gift of $2.5 million gift to establish the Travis M. Roy Professorship in Rehabilitation Sciences at Sargent and provide the foundation with office space on campus and a $50,000 annual stipend towards staffing for the next 10 years.
