McLeod was the first player to make the Olympic first team appearance at the age 17 in 1975, when he played Poland during the Games in Toronto. The following year, he was part of Canada’s Olympic team in the Olympic Games in Montreal and was a star in an unforgettable game in the match against Soviet Union in the Olympic Stadium. McLeod was part of Canada’s national team during World Cup qualifying in 1976 and also in the years 1980 and 1981. McLeod was awarded 18 international caps in total with one goal.
The family was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, McLeod spent his young career with Coquitlam Blue Mountain. In 1976, he relocated into Vancouver Columbus FC (Italia). In 1977, McLeod joined the Tampa Bay Rowdies of the North American Soccer League. In the course of eight seasons with the Rowdies McLeod was named as a member of the NASL’s North American All-Star team in 1977 1978, 1978 and 1979, 1980 1981, 1982 and 1977 an unprecedented six times. Then, in August of 1984 McLeod was signed by the New York Cosmos of the Major Indoor Soccer League. In February 1985 the Cosmos were eliminated from the league. McLeod was signed by the Dallas Sidekicks on February 25 in 1985. In the span of seven seasons McLeod was a triple All-Star and also the 1989-1990 Defender Of The Year. He was retired in May of 1992. In September 2003, his #8 shirt was removed from the Sidekicks.
